Ensure gas fittings and flues are maintained in a safe condition. Gas appliances should be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If these are not available it is recommended that they are serviced annually unless advised otherwise by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
If you suspect, based on symptoms, that you’re experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning, open windows and doors, switch off all gas-powered devices, evacuate the property, seek immediate medical advice, and contact the Gas Emergency Service. If you smell gas, whether inside or outside, or experience any of the symptoms of exposure to natural gas (including feeling lightheaded, dizzy or nauseated and experiencing headaches), call the Gas Emergency Service immediately.
DSEAR Regs (Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmosphere Regulations) 2002 (SI 2002 No.2776) employers must put control measures in place to eliminate risks from dangerous substances or reduce them as far as is reasonably practicable. This includes maintenance of equipment and fitting of flashback arrestors. The Acetylene Safety (England and Wales and Scotland) Regulations require that all mobile systems shall be fitted with a purpose designed regulator for acetylene, a flashback arrestor incorporating a non-return valve and a pressure and/or temperature sensitive cut-off valve. All reputable gas engineers are listed on the Gas Safe register and carry a Gas Safe identification card, anyone working with gas appliances who is not registered with Gas Safe is breaking the law. What is the Gas Safe Register? The Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration and licensing body in the UK, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and Guernsey. For anyone that remembers CORGI, the Gas Safe Register took over from CORGI in 2009. You can rest assured that engineers listed on the Gas Safe Register have been required to provide evidence of their qualifications and experience to prove their technical competence. The work of registered engineers is also inspected regularly to ensure that they are meeting current standards and following best practice. As well as coordinating and maintaining the Gas Safe Register and regulating the standard of work being carried out by registered engineers, Gas Safe also raise public awareness of gas safety and investigate illegal gas work that has been carried out.
