Here are a few tips about how to decrease the costs of your printing jobs. It is essential to clean your print head at least once a month. Remove the cartridge and clean the head with warm water. Don’t use wet tissues or alcohol to clean the print head. After cleaning, allow the print head to dry completely before fixing it back. You must also clean the insides of the printer regularly. Don’t wait until the dust and grime form layers, preventing your printer from operating efficiently. Use lint-free cloths that are slightly moist to wipe the dust away. While cleaning your printer, never apply too much force even if you encounter stubborn corners of grime. Use soft bristles and moistened Q-tips to remove the grime. Alternatively, you can also use compressed air to blow out the dust that is accumulated within the printer. Try to avoid using a vacuum unless it is a pressure-controlled vacuum that sucks the dust away gently.
Like most products, your printer will last longer if you take good care of it; even an incorrectly resolved paper jam can lead to printing issues in the future. Instead of getting frustrated when a jam does occur and yanking the paper out, refer to the instructions that come with the printer to find the best way to fix a jam on your specific model. Usually, the best practice is to use both hands to slowly pull the jammed paper out of the printer to avoid leaving ripped paper behind or damaging the internal parts of the printer. You can also prevent jams by making sure the paper you load into the printer is not torn, dog-eared or stuck together and that the tray is not overfilled.
Getting a warning that your printer is out of ink? Go ahead and ignore it. In a lab test, PC World found that ink cartridges still contained anywhere from 8 to 45 percent of their ink when this message started to pop up. Thick fonts and bolded text require extra ink to print, so skinny up your text and save. Some ink-sipping fonts to try: Arial and new courier. Want to save even more? Download Ecofont, a free font that uses 20 percent less ink by placing small white circles within each character.
Proper care starts the moment you bring home a new cartridge. Before you install the cartridge, be sure to inspect it. Gently shake the cartridge or tap it on a hard surface a couple times to prime the ink. On the top of most cartridges, you’ll find a piece of plastic tape that covers the vent hole and a plastic clip that is protecting the cartridge while in transit. Not every cartridge will have a clip or tape, but if they do it’s important to remove them before you try installing your ink. We recommend doing this over a trashcan as ink can sometimes escape from the cartridge when you remove the tape. On the side of the cartridge, you might notice a gold contact chip. This chip is very sensitive, as it is the electric component that communicates with the printer once it is installed. If you do accidentally touch it with your finger or notice a bit of dust, gently wipe it clean with a Q-tip or lint-free cloth.
