The capital city of Croatia – Zagreb has a host of surprises under its belt. For those with artistic bend a little love for the Medieval Era, Zagreb is perhaps the best place to start. Full of historical sites, theaters, galleries, and museums, this town offers a unique taste of Medieval times that cannot be ignored. The famous Jarun lake is yet another attraction that calls for the partying folks more than anyone else. With lake-side discos, this lake has a jovial and free-spirit nature that attracts the ones that love to enjoy life to the fullest. For those with a slightly different taste of tranquility, a refreshing swim or a lazy sailing on the silent waters can be just as magical as one can think of.
On the River Noord between Rotterdam and Dordrecht is the famous village of Kinderdijk (“Children’s Dike”), which takes its name from an incident during the St. Elizabeth’s Day flood of 1421 after a child’s cradle had been stranded on the dike. The big draw these days are the fantastically preserved 18th-century windmills. Now UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the 19 Kinderdijk windmills, built between 1722 and 1761, are the largest surviving concentration of windmills in the Netherlands. Originally used to drain the fenlands, these majestic buildings with their impressive 92-foot sails are open to the public from April to October, including special Mill Days when the sails are set in motion.
Regardless of whether you are religious or not, the Sistine Chapel is a stunning place to visit if you are lucky enough to travel to Vatican City. It is a chapel that lies within the Apostolic Palace which is the official residence of the Pope. Its purpose is for both religious and papal activity. The chapel was constructed in the 15th century and was designed by Baccio Pontelli and Giovanni Dolci. Other than the religious and historical significance of this building, another reason why people visit the chapel is to admire the breath-taking frescoes on the ceiling of the chapel. Being an island, it is no wonder that Kalymnos too is a hotbed for everything watersport. In particular, these activities take place within the sea channel that separate Kalymnos from Telendos. A number of sporting activities do take place here. These are sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, competitive swimming, scuba diving, and canoes. You may choose to go solo or participate in the various events which are hosted by the local municipalities. Also complementing your enjoyment of these issues are the numerous rental facilities. You need not necessarily carry your own sporting equipment. Instead, you have the privilege of renting your own from the various companies that deal with them. Be ready though to part with some money to access the venues and take part in sporting activities.
